About Landmines

A landmine is a target (person or vehicle) operated explosive weapon. Their non-explosive predecessors (caltrops, stakes and spikes) have been used on the battlefield since ancient times. Landmines were designed to deter, channel, delay and kill an enemy. They have been used, in various formats, for centuries and have been featured in all major conflicts. Landmines are a force multiplier increasing the efficiency of a defending force without requiring more personnel.

Social and Economic Impact

The landmine crisis is both humanitarian and economic. Landmines don’t just maim or kill innocent men, women and children. They prevent local populations in some of the pooorest countries in the world from farming their own land for food and building basic infrastructure such as schools and hospitals.

Demining

The least expensive landmine costs only $3.00. However, removing one landmine costs from $100-1000. Unfortunately, they are very easy to make, but difficult to remove.

It is estimated that there are approximately 100 million landmines littering the earth to date. At the current rate of removal it will take over 1000 years to clear all mines and unexploded ordinance.
